Adopt Hennessy on Petfinder (2024)

Hennessy ACCT-A-165165 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Hennessy must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19TH at 10AM. Should Hennessy's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Meet Hennessy! This beautiful girlie is just one year old but sadly has already found herself surrendered to the shelter through no fault of her own. Her owner began experiencing medical issues and was no longer able to care for their beloved pup, and she was surrendered to the shelter on May 24th. This petite girl is ready to find her new fur-ever home with a family who will love and cherish her as much as her first owner did.

During Hennessy's shelter stay, we've learned so many wonderful things about her very special personality! Initially shy and nervous in this new environment, Hennessy has blossomed into a lovable, social, and affectionate pup. Staff and volunteers have described Hennessy as a very well-behaved girl who loves meeting other dogs and has a wonderfully easygoing disposition. Throughout her many dog meets here at the shelter, she has done very well with dogs of various temperaments.

This shy, reserved girl has been overlooked by adopters so far, but hasn't given up hope that her perfect person is out there! Unfortunately, due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs, Hennessy must urgently find placement with an adopter or rescue partner. Check out Hennessy's full shelter notes and view her dog meet videos below, and come to meet her at ACCT Philly any day from 10am to 6pm!

Behavioral Information -

Throughout her shelter stay, staff and volunteers have praised Hennessy's great leash manners and ease of handling while out for daily walks. They noted Hennessy typically has a medium energy level, and is a super cuddler who loves to snuggle just as much as she like playtime! Hennessy has not shown any issues with mouthing or jumping, and can be slightly shy at times but generally is very easy to handle and walk with no issues. Staff and volunteer's walk notes include:
"Perfection!"
"Nice walk, knows sit."
"Gentle, affectionate, loves belly scratches. Sweetheart!"
"Good [dog] meet with Berks. Playful with ball."
"Good [dog] meet with Mochi."
"Best pup ever. Loves to cuddle and be near, amazing on leash!"
"Good fence meet with Miro [male dog]. Shy at first, backed up in kennel. Rolled over for belly rubs. Still dodging leash a little. Loves belly rubs."
"The best!"
"Love her. Loves hugs/pets. Gets random zoomies on leash!"
"Good [dog] meet with Garnet. Did offsite walk to help her adjust to noise and sound."
"Sweet, good."

Volunteer noted on 5/29: This was my third time taking Hennessy out. She was up and in front of her kennel & did some back and forth dancing in kennel with the leash presented. Treats were introduced and she reduced her back and forth cadence so that I was able to leash her. Hennessy walked nicely outside and while in the run, she immediately rolled over for belly rubs. Hennessy played fetch today which was captured on video. She sat for the ball and retrieved it with a trot back to me totally under control. Hennessy was very well-behaved in the run. She rolled over for more belly rubs. While outside, we proceeded with a dog meet with Berks that was also sent in for both of them. We started with a short walk-along and then a face to face meet. Hennessy did great and returned to her kennel with no issues. What a good pup!

Per Staff on 5/27: Hennessy came out for activity time today fully prepared for all the affection. When the handler went to her kennel she full body wagged, darting back in forth in front of the kennel, showing soft eye contact. Hennessy dodged the leash, play bowing, and continued to wag her tail. The handler had to keep trying to lasso the leash on her before she finally slowly came out. Once in the eval room, Hennessy jumped straight into the handlers lap asking for pets. She rolled around all over, showing us her belly, paws, and butt. She tried to play with the toys, pawing at them and picking them up but dropping them again. Hennessy is a perfect angel baby that loves to cuddle and give kisses. She allows the handlers to touch her more fluidly without any reaction and fully submits.

Volunteer noted from 5/26: Backed away from me as I opened the kennel door. Came forward to smell my leash and backed away again. Tossed treats which she ate. Presented the leash again and she backed into the corner. Tossed more treats. Looped her and He easy stayed on the bed at first. A few more treats and she left her kennel calmly and under control. Hennessy walked without pulling. She sought pets- often in more of a crouched position at first. With time, Hennessy sniffed in the run, ate grass and followed me around the run. She solicited more pets and rolled over 3x for belly rubs. She took treats nicely. Hennessy saw a dog walking by and met Myra at the fence with loose, wiggly body and two play bows. She reapproached me for pets and treats. Sent in video of fence meet. No issues with returning her to kennel. After our walk, Hennessy was often standing calmly in front of her kennel or sitting g on her bed and watching all the activity. Great pup!

Staff noted on 5/27: Hennessy was in dispatch and was being very sweet and seeking a lot of attention from APO Anne. She also takes treats very gently. She was rolling on the floor playing for a while.

Staff noted on 5/25: Kennel presentation - nervous. Hennessy was sitting by the door when I approached. I had seen her trying to hide under her bed earlier, so I was happy to see her by the door. She gave me some whale eye and a lip lick as I opened the door, and avoided eye contact as I tried to leash her. She pancaked and got out of the first leash, but I was abele to leash her again easily. She did not want to come out of kennel, and I tried using treats and coaxing to get her to move, but she just backed away farther. I ended up using some quick leash pressure to get her out. Pulls minimally on leash. Handleability/sociability - tense, allows all handling. Hennessy was very fearful and nervous in the room. She attempted to shove herself in a corner and hide, giving lots of whale eye and some lip licks if we looked her direction. I offered treats but she didn't take them at first. The other handler had to leave for a moment, and Hennessy seemed to relax a bit. She seems like a one person kind of dog, and gets easily overwhelmed. She allowed some body pets but did give me some whale eye. I used some baby voice to try to coax her to me and offered more treats. She gave some low wags and some whines, but did not take the treats and gave hard whale eye when I pet her. She allowed all handling but was very tense and uncomfortable throughout. Hennessy gives a lot of whale eye as warning, and takes a long time to warm up to new people. Very cautious of strangers, go slow for her. Play - no interest. Toys - interest but does not take possession. Perked up and wagged for squeaky toys but never took one. Color level blue - limit handling, very fearful and nervous.

Staff noted on 5/25: Very very fearful and nervous around strangers GO SLOW! Not very treat motivated, gives lots of whale eye as warning and is overall tense with handling at this time, [kids] 15+.

Hennessy was surrendered at the shelter by a family member of her owner on 5/24, due to her owner's health concerns. The family member noted that Hennessy is friendly, mostly housebroken, walks well on her leash, responds to some commands, and has a high energy level. While she can be shy around strangers, Hennessy is noted to be playful with kids and other dogs. The family member also noted that Hennessy is scared of cats!

Medical Information -

During an intake exam on 5/24, staff found Hennessy to be in good overall health. They noted she weighs 41.4 pounds.

Hennessy was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection on 5/30. The vet also assessed Hennessy for anxiety on 5/30, noting: Behavior - improved, more interactive but shy, sniffing hand, attentive with loose body language. Fear anxiety - well controlled on clonidine based on visual recheck. Plan - Continue clonidine until otherwise.
