As Legend grows up, he finds himself drawn to the ship's piano, and soon becomes a virtuoso. After a romantic encounter with a beautiful passenger, he chooses to remain on the ship, never setting foot on land and never aging. As the years pass, he comes to be known as the 'mythical' 'Legend of the Pianista del Piroscafo'. Through his friendship with Max, a stoker on the ship, Legend is able to lead a solitary life of music and friendship on the sea. The film follows Legend's story until the ship is finally decommissioned and his fate is revealed.

Along the way, he meets Maud Brewster (Lupino), a passenger on the Ghost, who helps to keep him grounded and provides support in a hostile environment. In the end, Van Weyden must confront his inner demons and decide between a life of freedom and one of captivity.
